Saint Valentine

Much is unknown about Saint Valentine, but the legends that surround his life are fascinating.  In this book we learned that he was arrested for marrying Roman soldiers after the emperor had forbidden it (the emperor thought they would make better soldiers if they didn't have a wife and family to care about).  It is believed that he sent hearts cut out of parchment to encourage the Christians that were being persecuted at that time (and perhaps started the tradition of sending Valentines).  While staying with a local senator he healed the senator's blind daughter and the whole family converted and was baptised.  It was for this that Valentine was eventually executed.
